Will insulation stone wool cause damage to human health?
Of course not. Some organizations (such as: World Health Organization) have conducted a lot of research on whether insulation stone wool fiber is carcinogenic, and the results clearly show that stone wool fiber is not a carcinogen. The results of the study are: "Insulating glass wool, continuous glass wool, stone wool and slag wool cannot be classified as human carcinogens (category 3)". Carcinogenicity studies of insulation stone wool are well known, and reports of these studies are published. Also, we are not aware of any stone wool application limitations as far as health concerns are concerned.
What need to be mentioned is that the flame retardant HBCDD used to make some foam products reach B1 level is a PBT substance (persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic). The European Chemical Agency has decided to list HBCDD as a substance that requires special concern (SVHC). From production to installation and dismantling, mineral wool (including
insulation stone wool) can be excluded from hazardous substances.
